The Word “Nigga”

I first think that it is important to do some background and understand the way that this word has come about. Nigger was the original form of the word which was meant to be a racial slur towards blacks and people of color. The original definition of this word is:  The contemptuous term used to refer to a person of any racial or ethnic origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.

Nigger was derived from the English word “neger” that came from the Spanish word “negro”; both of these words meant Black. In the 19th century, the word became prevalent and ingrained into American culture. The usage of this term is to deteriorate the view of Blacks and those outside the Caucasian race, to make these different ethnicities seem inferior.

Let’s move forward with today’s use of the word; it has evolved into the word “Nigga”. People, even some Blacks, do not understand the usage of the word within today’s culture. It is not used to degrade those within the Black/Colored population but more so as a term of endearment. We have taken something that was used to oppress us and flipped into a cultural weapon. I’m not saying this to say that this is the right way to go about but you fight fire with water. Nigger is ours, we have the title, full ownership to use this word.

The stipulations put onto the word is a way to, again, take another possession from the Black/Colored community. Whites have since the beginning of history been conquerors of nations, whether they’re established or third world. It has become somewhat of a hobby for this race, and with no remorse they continue to want more. Western culture carries on the legacy of stripping nations of their identity until there is nothing left. You’ve taken land from a whole two continents: African and North America; you’ve stolen customs, traditions, and resources and incorporated it into the most corrupt nation in the world.

Even in 2015, racism and prejudice remains a struggle within America. ISIS events are the headlines but let’s discuss the black lives that you take with no guilt. You’ve attached a stigma onto the backs of our young black men, to the point where you’ve made them believe that the penitentiary is their home. If there is a race who deserves the title Nigger, it’s the white race. Nigga is the last thing you can take from us.

P.S. I do not mean to offend any of my readers that are members of this race but I’m simply stating what I believe. I am not a racist nor am I prejudice.

“Acting Black”; When did ignorance become synonymous with being black?

The Subaltern

Arriving in the UK as an African girl with my luggage in tow and a massive grin on my face, filled with expectations,  I was halted in my steps by a discovery. I found that in the western world, it wasn’t enough to be born black, it was possible to act black, dress black, talk black.

I realised that just as there is a box often made for each and every one of us which only the daring and non-conformists manage to escape, there is a box made for black people in the western world to fit into, in the UK and even more so in the USA.

I was often told by black people who grew up in the UK (Black British) that I act white. When they see that my playlist isn’t filled with songs that refers to women as bitches and men as niggas, when they see artistes…

No Happy Place

I used to think that we determined our happiness, that it is within our control to grasp and tackle. Lately I haven’t been too sure that this is the way everything works. You don’t get to dictate the obstacles placed in your life that lead to the throbbing unhappiness. It’s completely out of your control. So how you get happy? If gnomes are constantly thrown at your feet as soon as you find your landing. Life is just too hard.
